READING, Pa. -

The rain contributed to an accident that closed part of the West Shore Bypass for nearly an hour Monday afternoon, officials said.

The accident happened shortly after 1 p.m. on the inner-loop of the bypass -- Route 422 West -- on a curve before the Lancaster Avenue interchange in Reading.

Initial reports from the scene were that three vehicles were involved in the accident and that one person was heavily entrapped in a Dodge Neon, which ended facing the wrong way on the bypass.

Rescue crews worked about 15 minutes to free the person from the wreckage. The victim was then transported to a hospital, but officials on the scene had no information about the extent of injuries.

The westbound bypass was closed at all entry points prior to Lancaster Avenue while crews worked to free the victim and remove the wreckage from the highway, but some motorists had no choice but to sit in wait in their vehicles.

Eastbound traffic was also backed up as one lane slowly made its way by the scene.

Al lanes of travel on the West Shore Bypass were reopened to traffic shortly before 2 p.m.
