HARRISBURG, Pa. -

Former Penn State president Graham Spanier is asking the judge in his criminal case to loosen bail rules that limit travel in the United States and prevent him from leaving the country.

Spanier's filing posted on the county court's website Monday argued there's no reason to think the travel restrictions are needed to ensure he will show up.

Spanier's lawyers say travel is a significant component of his profession and he's had to rule out international speaking opportunities.

Any U.S. travel requires prior court approval.

Spanier faces charges for an alleged coverup of complaints about former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. Sandusky is serving a prison sentence after being convicted a year ago of 45 counts of child sexual abuse.

Court officials haven't scheduled a preliminary hearing for Spanier.
