Governor Tom Corbett: Gays, 12-yr-olds shouldn't marry
Updated On: Aug 29 2013 12:35:48 PM CDT
Lawyers for Governor Tom Corbett say that same sex couples have no more right to marry in Pennsylvania than 12-year-olds do.
Gov. Tom Corbett’s administration has filed a lawsuit seeking to block same-sex marriage licenses in Montgomery County.
State attorneys said in a Wednesday court filing the licenses have no “legitimacy.”
They compare gay and lesbian couples to children, who can’t marry because a 1996 law says marriage is between a man and a woman.
The administration filed the suit to keep Montgomery County Register of Wills, D. Bruce Hanes from issuing same sex marriage licenses.
Hanes says the law is discriminatory. He’s scheduled to appear in court next week.
Gay couples say a ruling against Hanes could invalidate their marriages.
In a response to Corbett's comments, Ted Harris, executive director of Equality Pennsylvania, issued the following statement:
"Although the Governor's position on marriage for same-sex couples is increasingly out-of-touch with the majority of Pennsylvanians, we understand that he must defend the laws of the state.
However, if there is one thing we can all agree on, it's that all people deserve to be treated with respect. The statements made by the attorneys do not simply defend the laws of the state; they deny loving, committed same-sex couples the dignity they deserve.
We're talking about couples who have been together for decades, who have built families together, who have given back to communities across Pennsylvania. We're not talking about children."
