A woman on the run since 1999 has pleaded guilty to charges in western New Jersey, and was extradited from Florida.
On Monday, Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony Kearns announced that Krystyna Kowal has pleaded guilty to burglary and false imprisonment charges.
The 56-year-old woman was arrested in Tampa, Florida, on the charges in connection with an incident on Nov. 10, 1999, in Milford.
Kearns said Kowal and her accomplice Henra Lapinska illegally entered a home while the homeowner was there, and locked her in the basement. Another accomplice--Wystar Paryus, aka Henry Glowaki, had dropped the women off at the home and waited in a vehicle outside during the burglary, Kearns added.
The victim was able to free herself and called police, who were able to catch the trio as they fled, Kearns said.
The three were indicted on June 29, 2000.
Officials said Kowal was a fugitive until she was apprehended this year. She'd avoided authorities for the past 15 years by using the alias Teresa Glowaki.
She was recently arrested in Florida for burglary and theft charges, officials said.
Paryus was tried in absentia and convicted of burglary in 2005. He remains at large.
Lapinska failed to appear for her first court appearance in 1999 and is also still at large.
Kowal was extradited to N.J. on July 1. She is being held at the Hunterdon County Jail on $50,000 bail.
Her sentencing has been set for Sept. 12.
Kearns said Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security are seeking to deport Kowal back to Poland.
