As the Lehigh Valley's newest hockey team comes to life, so does the team's new mascot, MeLVin, but he won't work for peanuts. He prefers popcorn!
On Tuesday morning, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms introduced their newest member, meLVin, who is a rare puck-nosed pladottle.
MeLVin was discovered in a basement vault in the historic Dime Bank in July, according to team officials.
MeLVin will wear the number '55' on his jersey, which is 'LV' in Roman numerals.
He is nearly 7 feet tall, has a nose shaped like a hockey puck, a colorful tail that matches his hair a fluffy orange fur on his body.
Mascot specialist David Raymond discovered MeLVin loves popcorn, but has a great distaste for chocolate bars and penguins.
To develop his character, meLVin has been touring the Lehigh Valley during the past month in search of a heart, courage, brain and a sense of home.
MeLVin, who communicates by whistling, expressed Tuesday that his home is indeed in the Lehigh Valley, (with the capital letters LV in his name) at the PPL Center in Allentown where he was discovered.
Team officials said meLVin found his heart while boxing in Easton with World Champion Larry Holmes, his courage on the obstacle course at Dutch Springs in Bethlehem and his brain at Lehigh University in Bethlehem.
The furry mascot will spend the next few weeks getting ready for the Phantoms' preseason home opener on October 17.
After that, he will be active at games and making appearances in the community throughout the year, team officials said.
The Lehigh Valley Phantoms are the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the NHL Philadelphia Flyers.
