FLEETWOOD, Pa. -

The Fleetwood Area Middle School's academic achievements have earned it recognition from the governor's office.

Acting Secretary of Education Carolyn Dumaresq visited the school Monday morning to present it with the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Academics.

The award is for the school attaining a score of 90 percent or higher on the 2012-13 school performance profile.

"On behalf of Governor [Tom] Corbett, I congratulate the Fleetwood Area School District community for working together to ensure that students are growing academically and are prepared for post-high school success," Dumaresq said. "Fleetwood Area Middle School is an example of the high-quality learning that is taking place in schools and classrooms across Pennsylvania."

Fleetwood Area Middle School attained a score of 91.7 percent – the highest in the district and the sixth highest among all 102 public schools in Berks County, Dumaresq said.

"The results reflected the efforts of all of the middle school staff," said Paul Eaken, the district's superintendent. "All of the students were challenged to increase their understanding of every lesson. As a result, middle school students displayed growth in math, reading, science, and writing."

The school performance profile provides detailed information about the academic performance of all public schools, including traditional public schools, brick-and-mortar and cyber charter schools, and career and technology centers, officials said.

"High-quality educators and school leaders greatly influence student achievement," Dumaresq said. "I applaud Fleetwood Area School District for its excellent educational programs, quality teachers, support staff and administrative team that are dedicated to raising student achievement."

The school performance profile includes results of the statewide assessments and other measures of student achievement, including academic growth from year to year, graduation rate, attendance rate and promotion rate.
