Firehouse Subs grant outfits Mount Penn Fire Company with gear for firefighters

Firehouse Subs has served up a donation that will help Mount Penn Fire Company firefighters do the job they volunteer for.

WYOMISSING, Pa. -

Firehouse Subs has served up a donation that will help Mount Penn Fire Company firefighters do the job they volunteer for.

The restaurant chain, through its public safety foundation, donated more than $16,000 in a grant for which the fire company applied on the Firehouse Subs website.

With the money, Mount Penn was able to buy eight full sets of turnout gear for its volunteer firefighters, including protective pants and coats.

"All of our guys are extremely happy, you know, because what money we don't get in grants we got to go raise it ourselves... so this kind of helps us [spend] more time with our families, more time training and less time asking for money, " said Chief Timothy Waldman, Mount Penn Fire Co.

Since its creation in 2005, the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation has given $9 million to first responders and public safety organizations in 40 states and Puerto Rico.

The donated money is raised through the $2 sale of each restaurant's leftover pickle buckets and the donation of customers' spare change.
