HEREFORD TWP., Pa. -

A 2-alarm fire heavily damaged a home near the border between Berks and Lehigh counties on Friday.

The fire was first reported shortly before 12:30 p.m. at 272 Old Mill Rd. in Hereford Twp., Berks Co.

The first units on the scene reported heavy fire in a home, prompting a second alarm for more manpower and additional tanker trucks to provide water.

No one was home at the time, but firefighters rescued several cats and two dogs from the burning building, officials said.

Investigators are now working to find the cause of the fire.
