A person died when the car they were driving hit a utility pole and caught fire in Monroe County early Thursday.
The accident happened around 3:10 a.m. in Paradise Township as the car, traveling south on Carlton Road, went through a stop sign at the intersection with Upper Swiftwater Road, according to state police.
The car hit a utility pole head on, then hit a tree and caught fire. Police said there were no visible skid marks or roadway evidence at the scene.
The driver was the only person in the vehicle and has not yet been identified.
Monroe County Coroner Bob Allen said the driver was incinerated, and officials can't tell if the person was a man or woman.
State police are investigating to try to find the identification of the victim, and then Allen will do a forensic autopsy.
The person was declared dead at the scene at 5:10 a.m. Thursday.
The crash also caused a power outage.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call state police at 570-839-7701.
Swiftwater Road was closed while PPL crews replaced the utility pole and downed power lines.
