Animal rescue to driver who hurt dog in hit-and-run: 'Shame on you'

A 12-year-old dog is on the mend with several broken bones and internal bleeding following an apparent hit-and-run in South Whitehall Township, Lehigh County.
It happened Wednesday night near the intersections of Broadway and Adams streets. According to officials at the Sanctuary at Haafsville, an animal shelter that was called in to rescue the dog, someone drove into the Yorkie, named Yogie, and left the scene.
But, thanks to a Good Samaritan who located the dog and contacted police, the Sanctuary at Haafsville was called in to get Yogie, who suffered four broken ribs, a broken fibula and internal bleeding.
The good Samaritan, Jennifer Becker of Allentown, said she found Yogie lying in the middle of the road -- wet, cold and bleeding. "I wrapped him up in a blanket to keep him warm," she said. "He stayed very calm."
After being treated, Yogie returned home with his owners, until suffering a setback that landed him back in the animal hospital.
As of Saturday morning, Yogie remained in the hospital with fluid in his lungs. While Yogie is "not entirely out of the clear," owner Michele Roman said she and veterinarians are hopeful he will recover and be able to return home in 2-3 days.
Roman said Yogie is beloved by her entire family.
"He's one of our family members," Roman said. "He's considered one of our kids. We don't do anything without him."
In a Facebook posting, the Sanctuary at Haafsville sent a harsh message to the motorist who left Yogie behind:
"You knocked on a couple of doors and when you could not find the owners, you left it on the side of the road. Really?..But you drove off, leaving it in the dark and the rain and injured. Shame on you."
Roman is encouraging anyone who has information about Wednesday night's incident to call South Whitehall Township police.
