DISTRICT III WRAP: Bulldogs, Lynx earn championship berths
The Wilson West Lawn girls soccer team and the Oley Valley field hockey team won their District III semi-final games on Tuesday, putting them in Saturday's championship games in Hershey. Twin Valley and Berks Catholic field hockey also remained alive in the District field.
At Don Thomas Stadium, the Wilson girls defeated Red Land in penalty kicks to claim a 2-1 win in the AAA semi-final. Rachel Hafer scored the goal in regulation for the Bulldogs while goalie Jess Hetrick was lights out in the shootout.
Wilson will meet Cumberland Valley on Saturday at Hersheypark Stadium at 7:30 for District gold.
Wilson vs. Cumberland Valley was the match-up in the boys 3A semi-final. But the Bulldogs fell in brutal fashion, 1-0, with just over two minutes left in the second overtime.
Austin Lubas was sensational in net all night for the Bulldogs, but Sam Pasewark netted the game-winner to topple the Bulldogs.
Wilson will play Central York at Northeastern High School on Saturday at 5:00 in the third-place game.
At Lower Dauphin Middle School, Oley Valley knocked off Boiling Springs, 2-1, in the 2-A field hockey semi-finals. The Lynx advance to Saturday's title game against Palmyra. That game will be at Henry Hershey Field at 1:00.
Carly Kauffman and Erin Gillingham scored the goals for the Lynx, who are the only Berks field hockey team now eligible for a District championship.
In consolation games, Berks Catholic and Twin Valley were both victorious, earning spots in Saturday's play-in games.
The Saints defeated Northern York, 4-1, while the Raiders handled Manheim Central, 2-0.
Twin Valley will play Hempfield at Exeter at 2:00. Berks Catholic squares off with Donegal at Penn Manor at 2:00.
At Central York, Berks Catholic defeated Northern York in straight sets to advance to the District III volleyball semi-finals.
The Saints will play Delone Catholic on Thursday at 7:30 at Wilson.
At Hempfield, Exeter's season came to an end, falling in four sets to Cumberland Valley.
