Residents and businesses in Berks, Lehigh and Northampton counties could be overlooking a lot of money due to them.
There's $58 million in unclaimed property available for claim in those three counties, as part of $1.9 billion throughout the state, according to state Treasurer Rob McCord.
"Last year, Treasury returned $5 million in unclaimed property to rightful owners in Berks, Lehigh and Northampton counties, but we want to see more of this money back in the hands of families and employers in this area," McCord said.
In Berks County, $20,366,538.77 is available to be reclaimed; in Lehigh it's $20,340,278.81 and $17,243,091.34 in Northampton County.
An individual in Easton is owed $68,000, and a $53,000 claim is waiting to be returned to an individual in Coopersburg, Lehigh Co., according to McCord.
The treasurer said people and organizations usually do not know they are owed property because “holders," or entities that hold property owed to others, are not required under state law to contact the owner before remitting it to Treasury.
As a result, the state treasury each year receives millions of dollars in unclaimed property in the form of abandoned bank accounts, forgotten stocks, uncashed checks, and contents of safe deposit boxes.
To see if you have unclaimed property, visit the state treasury's website.
Individuals who recognize a name on the advertised list or in the online database may claim their property by calling 1-800-222-2046, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Treasury’s return team will be happy to assist them in recovering their property free of charge. Claims can also be initiated online at www.patreasury.gov.
