HELLERTOWN, Pa. -

A man who had been drinking shot off a handgun next to a woman's head during a fight in his home, causing her to lose some of her hearing, officials said.

Dennis J. Wiedmann discharged a .44-caliber revolver after hitting the woman in the head with the gun in the kitchen of his home in the 1600 block of Bleyler Street in Hellertown, Northampton Co., around 7:35 p.m. Tuesday, officials said.

Court papers do not explain the woman's relationship to Wiedmann, but say police were called to the scene to investigate a domestic dispute.

The woman was found sitting on the corner of Wagner Avenue and Morris Street with a forehead injury after she had asked a neighbor to call 911, but when police tried to question her, she said she couldn't hear very well because of the gun shot, officials said.

Wiedmann was arrested after arriving drunk at the intersection in a black Chevrolet Tahoe, officials said.

During a subsequent search, police found a loaded .44 caliber revolver and a spent .44 caliber shell casing, officials said, adding that the bullet fired by Wiedmann went through the kitchen ceiling.

Wiedmann, 55, was arraigned on charges of aggravated and simple assault, disorderly conduct, harassment and DUI and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $50,000, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Dec. 4.
