HARRISBURG, Pa. -

The Democratic candidates for Pennsylvania governor are reacting swiftly to a pair of new independent polls showing a major surge in support for York businessman Tom Wolf.

A poll by Connecticut-based Quinnipiac University said Wolf would capture 52 percent of the vote if the general election were held Wednesday and that Republican Gov. Tom Corbett would garner only 33 percent.

A Franklin & Marshall College survey showed 48 percent of Democratic voters undecided, but put Wolf far ahead of at least four of the other candidates.

Spokesmen for other Democratic candidates say Wolf's monthlong TV advertising blitz aired before any of them had put up TV ads and predicted the race would tighten once they do.

Corbett's campaign manager, Mike Barley, says polls based on hypothetical races are meaningless.
