Beams being delivered for an ongoing bridge project may slow your travel through Berks County this week.

EXETER TWP., Pa. -

Beams being delivered for an ongoing bridge project may slow your travel through Berks County this week, PennDOT said.

The concrete I-beams, each measuring 134 feet long and weighing more than 85 tons, are being used to replace the Route 345 bridge over the Schuylkill River between Exeter Township and Birdsboro.

The first of five beams to be delivered from Cressona, Schuylkill Co., on Tuesday attracted a number of onlookers, who stood by and gazed at the over-sized tractor trailer carefully making its way to the project site.

Five more beams are scheduled to be delivered between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Thursday, weather-permitting, said Ron Young, a spokesman for PennDOT.

Motorists should expect sporadic delays on Route 422 East between Pineland Road and Route 345 in Exeter Township, and Route 345 between Route 422 in Exeter Township and Route 724 in Birdsboro.

Traffic on Wednesday should not be impacted by the project, Young said.

The $14,547,827 bridge project began in August 2012. It's expected to be complete in June 2014, PennDOT said.

Chester County-based J.D. Eckman is serving as the project's general contractor.
