An 82-year-old bus driver died of accidental causes after falling out of his vehicle Monday in Allentown.
Shortly after 3 p.m. Monday, Erwin Smoyer fell out of the emergency door exit of a para-transport bus in the 1900 block of Lehigh Street in south Allentown, according to Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim.
Smoyer was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m. Monday at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Salisbury Township.
He was the driver of the vehicle, a LANtaVan, operated by Easton Coach Company.
"Yesterday was Erwin Smoyer’s seventh anniversary as a driver with Easton Coach Company," said P. Joseph Scott III, president and CEO of Easton Coach. "He was well liked both by his fellow employees and by his passengers. He had an exemplary safety record and was regarded as a sweet, conscientious guy. We will miss him."
An autopsy was performed Tuesday morning. The coroner determined that Smoyer died from severe head injuries received in the fall.
Scott said Smoyer "was found unconscious on his back behind his parked bus. He was in the process of helping passengers board the bus at Good Will Industries on Lehigh Street, where he has been transporting people for many years."
Scott said the victim's brother said Smoyer never regained consciousness.
Smoyer resided at 3266 2nd Ave. in Orefield.
Grim said the reason the accident occurred still is being investigated.
