ALLENTOWN, Pa. -

David Lewis has been named president of United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, effective immediately.

Lewis has been serving as acting president since Susan Gilmore resigned from the post on May 1.

Lewis was hired by Gilmore in January 2012 as vice president of resource development.

"When we hired David as V.P. of resource development, we were planning for the future and we knew he was a strong candidate to succeed Susan," said Drew Lewis, United Way chairman. "With his extraordinary background and exceptional experience within the United Way system, we were grateful to have such a highly-qualified individual primed and able to lead this organization."

Lewis began his work with the United Way in 1988, serving as campaign director in southeastern Pennsylvania. He served as vice president and chief operating officer in Lancaster County prior to moving to the Lehigh Valley.

"We are fortunate to have someone with David’s experience and commitment to lead our United Way in building a stronger, healthier Lehigh Valley," said Paul Farr, United Way board member. "His experience, combined with his commitment to helping people, is a great asset for our community."

The United Way is conducting a nationwide search for the next vice president of resource development.
