A Bucks County softball coach is facing sexual assault charges related to an alleged sexual relationship with a 16-year-old he coached.
Tuesday Bucks County District Attorney David Heckler charged Eric Romig, 36, with sexual assault of a teenager girl.
The teen was a player Romig coached on the Pennridge junior varsity softball team and a traveling softball team, according to police documents.
The pair sent text messages that were sexual in nature and they engaged in sexual acts, Heckler said.
Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Schorn told 69 News there were about 15 sexual encounters since May at the victim's house, Romig's house, and a park.
The teen's parents noticed unusual activity on the girl's cell phone which led them to report the abuse to authorities, the DA said.
The District Attorney's office wasted no time charging Romig. It took less than 24 hours from the time the girl's parents notified police until charges were filed.
"Parents in this case did everything we hope parents will do and they paid close attention to their daughter's cell phone use and noticed something out of the ordinary," said Schorn. She said Romig is married with young children.
"I think we constantly have to be on guard, sadly, in this day and age because individuals like this do exist," said Schorn.
The following is a statement from Pennridge School District CEO Jacqueline Rattigan:
"I received a call late this afternoon that one of our coaches had been taken into custody. Mr. Romig is not a staff member. He has been a coach for two years. Mr. Romig has been suspended as a coach effective immediately until both our internal investigation and that of the D.A. ‘s office have both been completed."
Rattigan said, "It's very upsetting, obviously very shocking. We're in the business of helping young people and making sure they're safe and they're here to learn."
Romig needs to post 10% of $500,000 to be let out on bail.
