Two pedestrians -- a woman and a small child in a stroller -- narrowly escaped serious injuries when a car and an SUV collided in downtown Reading on Friday.

READING, Pa. -

Two pedestrians -- a woman and her 2-year-old granddaughter in a stroller -- narrowly escaped serious injuries when a car and an SUV collided in downtown Reading on Friday.

The accident happened shortly before 11:30 a.m. at 8th and Penn streets, with the vehicles stopping just short of the sidewalk on the southeast corner of the intersection.

The woman managed to hold on to the stroller as she jumped out of the way of the crashing vehicles, said officials on the scene, adding that both were transported to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Firefighters had to free the driver of the car from the wreckage, but officials had no information on that person's extent of injuries.

Police are investigating witness reports that one of the vehicles was traveling the wrong way, but officers said they don't believe that was the case.
