NEWARK, N.J. -

Newark Mayor Cory Booker is the favorite to win a fast-paced race for U.S. Senate set off by the death of Sen. Frank Lautenberg this month, but this is not the race Booker expected to run.

The charismatic leader planned to campaign a year from now, when the seat would be open as Lautenberg retired. So, he hasn't raised as much money as he hoped. He's also being challenged by three experienced Democratic officeholders.

The campaign will be run over nine weeks. As few as 200,000 Democrats could decide the outcome, an anticipated turnout so low it adds to the uncertainty.

Whoever wins the Democratic primary is likely to win a special election in October. New Jersey voters haven't elected a Republican to the Senate in more than 40 years.
