PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. -

Kenneth Ford Hamilton Jr., a special education teacher at Phoenixville Middle School in Chester County, was charged Sunday with 13 felony counts involving child pornography.

The case was investigated by the central computer crime task force of the Pennsylvania State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

On Oct. 13, a state police undercover investigation determined images of child pornography were being shared over the Internet from Hamilton's computer.

Last Wednesday, police searched Hamilton's apartment along Kimberton Road in Phoenixville and seized his desktop computer, hard drive, two thumb drives and other electronic storage devices. Police then discovered digital images and videos of child pornography belonging to Hamilton.

Hamilton admitted to police that he sought out images of child pornography for his own sexual arousal.

He told police he deleted the pornography after viewing it. Police recovered some images in his deleted image file.

The charges against him include possession and dissemination of child porn, sexual abuse of children and criminal use of a communications facility.

Unable to post $250,000 cash bail, the 58-year-old Hamilton was interred in Chester County Prison.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday in District Court 15-2-01.

"The Pennsylvania State Police did an outstanding job neutralizing this threat to our children," said Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan.

"Viewing child pornography often is one of the early steps along the path to sexually abusing children. Gaining regular access to kids is a second step. A teacher who is accessing child pornography is a recipe for disaster."

As of mid-afternoon Monday, Phoenixville Area School District officials had not received any official notification from authorities about the charges against Hamilton.

The school district has put Hamilton on unpaid leave.

“Following a phone call from his family, Phoenixville Area School District has learned through published media reports of the arrest of Phoenixville Area Middle School teacher Kenneth Hamilton, Jr. on charges of possession of child pornography," said district spokesman Keith Black.

At this time, the district has not received any official notification from authorities regarding those charges.

"The district will, of course, cooperate fully with any investigation into these allegations, if requested to do so."
