PHILADELPHIA -

Charlie Manuel has been fired by the Phillies after nearly nine seasons as manager in Philadelphia. Former IronPigs manager Ryne Sandberg will take over on an interim basis.

Ruben Amaro, Jr. announced at a press conference Friday afternoon that the team would not renew Manuel's contract at season's end. The move was effective immediately, as third-base coach Ryne Sandberg stepped in as interim manager.

Manuel leaves Philadelphia as the winningest manager in franchise history. He has 780 wins with the Phils and 1,000 in his career. He delivered a World Series title in 2008, ending a 28-year drought.

Manuel insisted at the press conference that he didn't quit, nor did he resign. The Phillies have offered him a place in the organization, but he hasn't decided whether he'll accept.

This year is Sandberg's third season in the Phillies organization, having served the first two as the manager for triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he went 155-132 (.540) and led the team to their first playoff appearance.
