Police are investigating a wild series of suspected DUI crashes that happened in the heart of West Reading around noon Tuesday.
A 67-year-old man struck three occupied vehicles while traveling east on Penn Avenue, first near State Hill Road in Wyomissing, said police, who suspect the man was traveling under the influence of alcohol.
"He was bouncing off cars like a pinball," said witness Rodney Carroll.
Around 2nd and Penn, police said the car came to a halt after striking a pole and launching debris into nearby business, Honeybee Gardens. Debris also hit and damaged a fourth vehicle, police said.
"It was a loud, thunderous sound, and then we just saw the streak of metal go past and smash into the glass, and glass went flying everywhere," said Melissa Hertzler, CEO, Honeybee Gardens. "It was terrifying."
Fortunately, no one inside the business was injured, but police said the driver was transported for medical treatment.
Two other victims were also transported for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
West Reading police Chief Steve Powell said officers were already near the incident when it occurred and arrived on-scene immediately.
Nearby workers also arrived upon hearing a crash and noticing smoke and flames.
"We heard a loud bang and knew there was something wrong, came outside and [the car] was parked there, motor running, high rate of speed, smoke coming out," said Corey Mauer, who was working at C & S Supply, located feet from the final crash.
Police said flames were quickly extinguished.
The incident remains under active investigation.
Eastbound Penn Avenue was closed between 2nd and 4th avenues for nearly two hours while police investigate the accident.
