Boil water advisory in Pottstown after water main break
A boil water notice was put in effect after a busted water main sent water gushing into the streets of Pottstown, Montgomery Co.
The 200 block of Berks Street remained closed Friday after repair crews carved up the street. The massive water main punctured, left a giant hole in the road and turned it into what looked like the Schuylkill River.
Bertha Auman was left with no water, and no way to care for her sick mother, who suffers from dementia.
"She's bed ridden and I have to wash her, so my daughter did bring some water," said Auman.
A dozen properties and one business, Superior Metal Products Co., were left dry, said officials.
The pressure came back on at Barth Elementary School and for Howard and Charlotte Charles early Friday morning, after water was re-routed.
"It's still brown, especially in the bathroom," said Howard Charles, who lives in the borough.
The 20-inch main gave way Thursday night around 6:30 p.m. Two million gallons of water flooded several blocks between Elm and West Walnut streets.
"Some of the edges look like they were pretty rusty. There might have been a small crack in it," said Doug Yerger, director of public works.
As crews worked around the clock to get it repaired, notices were posted on front doors alerting homeowners in the area to boil their water.
"That boil water notice will stay in place until we run a couple samples," said Yerger, who added that could last until Sunday.
The water main was expected to be fixed late Friday afternoon, but it will likely be awhile before Berks Street reopens.
