Body of missing man found in Delaware Water Gap
A hiker found the body of a 51-year-old Lancaster County man early Thursday evening in Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, Monroe County.
The body of Thomas Stewart was discovered near Lake Lenape, which is within the borough of Delaware Water Gap, at about 6:30 p.m.
Stewart had been missing for more than a week.
An unsuccessful search for the man was conducted last weekend, using search dogs and a helicopter.
The cause of death was accidental, said Monroe County Coroner Robert M. Allen, who conducted an autopsy Friday.
Allen said the corpse was found in a stream. He determined Stewart died from exposure to cold and drowning.
Stewart had last been seen exiting his vehicle on March 25 at Resort Point Overlook along Route 611.
A National Park Service search-and-rescue team initiated a search of the area around Resort Point and Mount Minsi on March 28, which continued through the weekend.
That team was assisted by New Jersey State Park Police, New Jersey Search and Rescue and canine teams from Ramapo Rescue Dog Association.
New Jersey State Police also searched the area with a helicopter.
Search efforts, which were hampered by weather conditions, yielded no leads. The search was called off on March 31, but park rangers continued to investigate Stewart’s disappearance.
"Our deepest sympathies go out to Mr. Stewart’s family and friends at this time,” said John J. Donahue, superintendent of the national recreation area.
