Bill would allow undocumented to get dr licenses

HARRISBURG, Pa. -

Pro-immigrant activists and several lawmakers gathered in Harrisburg Wednesday to push for legislation that would make it legal for undocumented immigrants to get driver's licenses.

Before 2002, it was possible to get a license if you were undocumented by using a tax-ID number.

The law now requires a social security number to obtain one.

On Wednesday, folks were supporting House bill 1648, which would reverse the law to what it used to be.

"It would give me more security and it would give more security to all the citizens of Pennsylvania because they're going to be 100% sure that who's driving on the street has a proper drivers license, insurance and all the paper work well done," said Pablo Escobar.

Opponents of the bill say there is a process undocumented immigrants need to go through before coming into the country.

The bill has been stuck in committee since August.
