BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

Jacqueline Lilley-McCammon, who had been selected by Bethlehem's mayor-elect to become the city's first female fire chief, has decided not to take the position.

Mayor-elect Robert Donchez said Thursday that McCammon, who is an assistant chief in the fire department, decided to withdraw from consideration to become chief.

"At this time, I will not comment further on the reasons for this development," said Donchez in a news release.

Donchez said he has notified the city council, which had to approve the appointment, of her decision.

"In consideration of this development, it is my intention to designate Deputy Chief {Robert] Novatnack to serve as interim chief until I select another appointee for council’s consideration."
