An accused drug dealer was taken into custody after fleeing on foot following a high-speed car chase throughout northeast Bethlehem that included a collision with a parked vehicle with a 3-year-old inside, officials said. The child was not injured, they said.
Pedro A. Vera was caught in the 500 block of Pembroke Road in Bethlehem Thursday afternoon, officials said.
Vera took off in his 1997 silver Infiniti at about 2:20 p.m., when police tried to pull him over on East Garrison Street, near Linden Street, after noticing his car had an expired inspection sticker, officials said.
Vera drove at a high rate of speed on High, East North and Penn streets, hitting the parked car with the child inside in the 800 block of Penn Street, officials said.
Vera jumped from his car while it was still moving on Maple Street, and the car rammed into a home at the corner of Pembroke Road, but didn't cause any damage, officials said.
Police found a blue zip lock bag of marijuana on the floor in front of the driver's seat; two cell phones near the bag; a black digital scale with residue inside the center console, and a safe inside the trunk, officials said.
Police came across several baggies of heroin and a bag with marijuana when they traced Vera's path after he fled on foot, officials said, adding that a total of 137 baggies of heroin was found.
Vera admitted to police that the marijuana and heroin were his; that he is a heroin dealer; that the pot inside his car was synthetic marijuana, and that he had smoked marijuana before officers tried to stop him, officials said.
Police also discovered that the license plate on Vera's 1997 Infiniti belongs to a 2000 Infiniti Vera owns, officials said.
Vera, 24, of 1235 Livingston St., Bethlehem, was arraigned on 13 charges, including fleeing an officer, reckless driving, escape and drug possession with intent to deliver, and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $75,000 bail, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. June 21.
