Doctors call it a miraculous recovery. A Berks County woman is back home recovering after being crushed by a 100-foot tree.
It happened exactly two months ago during a powerful storm. For the first time, Russeline Wily spoke out after enduring the fight of her life.
"All I can say is it's a miracle that I'm here. Even the doctors say it," said Wily, who admitted she has always been a fighter.
Wily, 76, returned home to recover less than two weeks ago. On Sept. 12, fierce winds knocked over a butternut tree, and it landed right on top of her.
"I must of heard that tree crack or whatever and I started running that way to get down the steps," said Wily.
From that point on, Wily said she doesn't remember. She was trapped underneath her deck outside her home on River Road in Muhlenberg Township. She spent 10 days in the ICU at the hospital.
One surgery helped relieve the pressure and blood between her brain and skull. A second surgery helped fix her tibia in her left leg that was crushed from the tree's impact.
"I would go in and out, so I don't remember a lot of that bad stuff," said Wily.
Her husband, Jack, said she couldn't talk for weeks. He was by her side praying she would recover.
Wily still can't put pressure on her left leg, and now she relies on a wheelchair to get around. Her son built a ramp at the front door to help her get in and out of the home, but come spring, she said she hopes to get rid of it.
"I'm trying to do more every day for myself," she said.
Wily is fascinated by rainbows, and it just so happened a rainbow could be seen from her front yard on the day of the accident. She said it was a sign, and through all of this, her faith has grown so much stronger.
"I can't tell you how much I love Jesus and how much he has helped me, and through all the prayers," Wily said.
