Tractor trailer rollover June 1, 2014
UPPER TULPEHOCKEN TWP., POa. -

A section of I-78 East in Berks County was shut down for several hours Sunday morning after a tractor trailer rolled over.

State Police said the crash happened just before 3 a.m. between exits 19 (Strausstown) and exit 23 (Shartlesville) in Upper Tulpehocken Township.

The road reopened around 9 a.m., after crews up-righted the overturned rig.

A couple of nearby residents told 69 News they were awoken by a loud crashing sound coming from the highway.

Police said the driver --42-year-old David Hemp of Middlebrook, Virginia, and his passenger--47-year-old William Knupp of Elkton, Virginia, were taken to Reading Hospital with unknown injuries.

The driver, who police said isn't recalling what happened, may have suffered a head injury.

Knupp, who was in the sleeper cabin of the vehicle at the time of the wreck sustained minor injuries, according to police.

Police said the tractor trailer was traveling east at mile marker 22 when it went off the right side of the road, hit an embankment and flipped onto its side.

The vehicle came to a rest a few hundred yards later, lying directly sideways across the road from the median to the embankment.

Crews dragged the vehicle towards the center of the road before up-righting it.

There's no word yet on what may have caused the crash or if any charges will be filed.
