Surgical Specialties Corp. will close its production facility in Berks County, shifting work to Mexico and leaving nearly 300 people looking for another job.

EXETER TWP., Pa. -

Surgical Specialties Corp. will close its production facility in Berks County next year, shifting work to Mexico and leaving nearly 300 people looking for another job.

The decision to close the facility in Exeter Township was made to improve the company's long-term competitive strength and provide cost savings, as well as the ability to operate more efficiently, Mark Sherman, the company's vice president of human resources, told 69 News on Monday.

The Exeter location employs 265 people. Sherman said the company plans to help the displaced employees by offering severance packages based on their years of service and training sessions to build their resumes, job searches and interview skills.

Surgical Specialties, founded in 1971 and based in Berks County, has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Angiotech Pharmaceuticals since 2006.

According to its website, the company specializes in the design and manufacture of suture needles, sutures, microsurgical cutting instruments, eye garters and ophthalmic cannulas.
