BEDMINSTER TWP., Pa. -

A former police chief in Berks County has been arrested on child pornography charges.

Robert Geist surrendered to authorities Tuesday in Bucks County, where he lives in Bedminster Township, near Perkasie.

Geist, the former chief of the Brecknock Township Police Department, was charged with various offenses, including possession and distribution of child pornography, according to court documents.

Geist was freed on unsecured bail following his arraignment before a district judge. He's due back in court for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 17.

Brecknock Township appointed Geist to lead its police department in 2011. He was fired in October 2012, according to the meeting minutes of the township's board of supervisors.

Berks County District Attorney John Adams told 69 News there was never any criminal investigation of Geist conducted in Berks County.
