Reading residents, officials have high hopes for industrial property

Plans to revive a 50-acre industrial site are now underway in Reading, exciting both city officials and nearby residents.
Groups of each united Wednesday to discuss their hopes and plans for the Dana South Industrial Property, acquired last month by the Reading Redevelopment Authority.
The site had formerly been on track to become the Berkshire Bottling plant, but that project was abandoned.
"I would say we were fortunate to be able to get this property," said Adam Mukerji, executive director, executive director, Reading Redevelopment Authority, during a news conference at the site near the West Greenwich and Tulpehocken streets entrance.
Mukerji said the RRA's first tasks are to secure the area and perform some "cosmetic clean-up."
Plans are then to develop a master plan, market the property and sell it. Mukerji said officials are already in contact with interested buyers.
"We have gotten calls. In fact, we are working with a couple of prospects now," he said.
As for when they intend to sell the property, that remains unknown. Ideally, the RRA wants to "buy local." That is, contract area workers and firms.
At the news conference, Reading residents told 69 News they hope the redevelopment will beautify the area and create jobs.
"I want to see something happen here," said Jose Martinez Rivera, who lives next door to the property. "We need the jobs and we need the area to grow up a little bit."
