Reading's mayor has vetoed City Council's bill to dissolve the Reading Area Water Authority.

READING, Pa. -

Reading's mayor has vetoed City Council's bill to dissolve the Reading Area Water Authority.

"This ordinance does not represent the best interests of the constituents of Reading and the Reading Area Water Authority consumers residing outside of our city," Mayor Vaughn Spencer said in his memo to council late Friday afternoon.

Council voted 5 to 2 on May 27 to terminate the water lease with RAWA, dissolving the authority and requiring the resignation of its board members.

Most council members have said they feel the city has lost control and oversight of its most valuable asset.

Spencer had supported entering into a new long-term lease with RAWA.
