A night on the job came to a frightening end for a pair of convenience store employees in Reading.

The workers had just closed the Turkey Hill store at 435 N. 13th St. shortly after 11:30 p.m. Monday when a man wearing a bandanna over his face attempted to open the front door, said Sgt. Matthew Schappell, Reading Police Dept.

When the employees motioned to the man that the store was closed, Schappell said he pointed what appeared to be a sawed-off shotgun or rifle at the front door and opened fire, hitting the counter inside the store.

The employees were not physically harmed, said police, who believe the man's motive was to rob the store.

The gunman was described as a tall, thin black man wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

Police said they are working to get surveillance video from the store. In the meantime, they ask that anyone who might have information about the incident to call Crime Alert Berks County at 877-373-9913. A cash reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
