Although school boards are often divided by differences, one Berks County board was united Wednesday by wearing matching t-shirts in support of a student.
The shirts read “Redcay Strong” to show the Muhlenberg School District board's support for Derrick Redcay, who suffered a sudden and rare stroke to his spinal cord last month.
As a result of the stroke, Redcay has no sensation or movement below his neck.
“Here we are, May 14, and it can be a time for all of us to reflect on the end of the school year, what we’ve accomplished and what we need to look at and going to the next step over time.” said Superintendent Dr. Joseph Macharola.
“This is the time to be reflective of the students in Muhlenberg School District, from the young cherubs that come in through kindergarten to seniors graduating and realize just how fragile life is,” he continued.
He said PSBA has lots of people advocating on its behalf, with the idea of raising money and supporting candidates to help put public education at the forefront of important issues.
The board also held elections for the board treasurer and assistant board secretary positions, both one-year terms.
Only single nominations were received for each position and votes were unanimous for both nominees.
Results of the elections saw current Assistant Secretary Rick Hoffman in as treasurer and board member Thomas Gross is now the new assistant board secretary.
Board members also unanimously approved the $52, 152, 524 proposed final budget for the 2014-15 school year.
Before the vote was taken Voit said, “Between now and June 18 there will be a ton of changes. I will be voting yes knowing that those changes are coming.”
No further comments were made on the budget, as the board chose to accept the proposed budget anticipating changes rather than speculating on what those changes might be.
The next meeting of the school board will be on June 18, where members will vote on the final budget for the 2014-15 school year.
