An outing with friends turned tragic Friday night after a teenager was killed in the streets of Reading.
Wilberto Rojas, 15, of the 800 block of Church Street in Reading, died on his way to the hospital after his neck was sliced, said police.
Police called it a gruesome and ruthless killing. They spent Friday night interviewing witnesses and following developing leads.
"I ran up to the corner, then I seen the kid laying down and I said, 'oh my god,'" said Eddie Gomez, who saw the teenager moments before he was killed.
Neighbors and friends were overcome with grief after the horrifying scene at the corner of Church and Douglass Streets. Rojas's neck was sliced and his attacker ran off in an instant, said police.
"It's just bad to see him like that in that condition, it was horrible," said Gomez. "The kid is a quiet kid, he doesn't bother nobody he keeps to himself."
Gomez said the teenager just left his house before 6:30 p.m. Friday, and was headed to the YMCA with a group of friends. According to police, that's when another man ran up and sliced the teen's neck.
"It's just traumatizing thinking of that. If it would have happened to any of my relatives it would have destroyed me," said Jairo Ordonez, who lives a few houses down from the crime scene.
The teen bled out in the street and was pronounced dead inside an ambulance on its way to the hospital, said police.
Officers roped off the area and started going door-to-door trying to get to the bottom of the brutal attack.
"He was a very nice person, he was always looking out for people he was cool," said Ordonez.
Evidence markers were placed next to a flip flop and towel in the street, and neighbors were left stunned.
"We don't see a lot of this around here like this, never ever this is kind of new for us," said Raymond Coleman, who lives in the neighborhood.
According to police, Rojas's attacker is described as a Hispanic man in his late 20's to early 30's. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Crime Alert Berks County at 877-373-9913.
An autopsy on Rojas is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
