An 89-year-old Philadelphia man suspected of Nazi war crimes has died while awaiting extradition to Germany, according to his attorney.
Johann Breyer died Tuesday night at a hospital in Philadelphia.
News of Breyer's death came as a judge issued an order granting a request for him to be extradited to Germany to face trial.
German prosecutors had hoped to try Breyer on charges of aiding in the murder of more than 200,000 Jews at the Auschwitz death camp.
Breyer had been in federal custody since his arrest last month at his longtime home in Philadelphia.
A judge on Monday reversed a decision that denied bail to Breyer. His attorney said Breyer's health was deteriorating in jail.
