Laureldale arson still under investigation

An arsonist who terrorized a quiet Berks County neighborhood is still on the loose, police said.

The crime happened about a year ago, in the 3200 block of Chestnut Street in Laureldale and neighbors have not forgotten.

"I even learned how to protect myself," said Charity Kallelis, a neighbor who says she has taken self-defense classes.

About a year ago, surveillance footage captured a person approaching a vehicle on Chestnut Street and then setting the vehicle on fire.

As the car is engulfed in flames, the footage shows the arsonist accidentally catching fire as well.

With flames shooting off the criminal's body, the video shows the arsonist walking away from the crime scene, never to be seen by neighbors again.

Police say, over the past year, there's been little movement in the case.

"Anything, if people can call, we'll follow up on it," said Trp. David Beohm, Pennsylvania State police

"I wish they catch them," said Kathy Hill, neighbor. "It's scary to know you have kids here and you don't know what can happen."

Authorities say they have not ruled out the possibility that the arsonist could be a woman.
