First responders rushed to the scene of a two vehicle accident involving a school bus on Route 222 in Richmond Township on Wednesday afternoon.
When they arrived, they found 23 students on board, many of them visibly shaken from the crash.
"The most important thing for us was A, to make sure that all the students or anybody involved in the crash got the appropriate medical care and the second thing is to make sure that another accident does not happen," said Fleetwood Police Chief Steven Stinsky.
The accident happened around 2 p.m. near the intersection of Kutztown Road and Kempsville Road.
Police tell us the Eshelman school bus was transporting Reading Muhlenberg Career and Technology students from a field trip at the Crayola Factory in Easton when it hit the back of another vehicle slowing for merged traffic.
The accident backed up traffic on Route 222 for more than a mile.
"We always have a lot of traffic accidents here. That is why we conduct a lot of aggressive driving enforcement details in this area to help try to slow the traffic down," said Stinsky.
Numerous ambulances arrived on scene to evaluate the students and transport 10 students to area hospitals.
Firefighters tell us they go through hours of training to be prepared for events like this one.
"We are always cutting vehicles apart up at our station. So the guys have a pretty good idea what they are doing, especially when it involves the kids. They come in and get them out right away," said Virginville Fire Lieutenant John Lubas.
The remaining students were bused to Reading Area Hospital for evaluation.
Crews had to pry the bus's right front bumper from contact with its wheel before both the bus and other vehicle could be driven away from the scene.
The police chief tells says once they determine exactly what happened, they may press charges if warranted.
