Icy weather creates hazardous road conditions

This tractor trailer jack-knifed at I-78 and Route 22 in Lehigh County Sunday afternoon.

Roadways are becoming hazardous in the 69 News viewing area as icy weather pushes through.

Early Sunday afternoon, the Berks County Department of Emergency Services issued a public statement noting that "all roadways are quickly become hazardous."

Several accidents were reported early in the afternoon in our viewing area, most notably the southern portions.


An accident with entrapment was reported on Route 422 in North Coventry Township, Chester County. Shortly thereafter, around 1 p.m., a crash blocked the right lane of the Pennsylvania Turnpike on I-476 between Mahoning Valley and Lehigh Valley at milepost 60.

Another wreck was reported in Berks County on I-78 in Greenwich Township and is tying up traffic. And a tractor trailer jack-knifed in Lehigh County at Route 22 and I-78.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike, as of 12:20 p.m., is operating under a winter weather advisory. The Turnpike Commission, on its website, notes: "Motorists should stay alert for areas of freezing rain and changing travel conditions during the morning hours. All travelers are urged to reduce their speeds and keep alert for emergency crews working on the roadway."
