Buildings damaged by wild weather

An incredible storm made an incredible mess as golf ball-sized hail pummeled parts of the region Thursday.

The hail smashed car windows and dented vehicle, the rain flooded roads, and the strong wind brought down trees. The damage is widespread.

So much hail fell in Berks County that PennDOT said it put a plow truck into action, clearing Route 222 between the Route 183 and Broadcasting Road interchanges.

The rain was so heavy and falling so fast that a driver in the Spring Street Subway in Reading couldn't avoid it. About six feet of water pooled up, prompting the need for a quick rescue by first responders.

Meanwhile, the hail did a number on the Berkshire Mall in Wyomissing. The hail was so powerful it broke through the mall's skylights, prompting the mall to evacuate shoppers and close its doors.

The good news is that no injuries were reported.
