BERN TWP., Pa. -

A barn built in Berks County at the turn of the 20th century was destroyed by fire early Monday morning.

The fire broke out around midnight in the 1000 block of Upper Van Reed Road in Bern Township.

"I got right up, threw a pair of pants on, my slippers and ran out because I knew Ginger was in there, in the stall," said Bernie Ellis, the farm's owner.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to find heavy fire and smoke, officials said. They were able to bring the flames under control in about an hour.

Ellis was treated at the scene for a minor injury he suffered while rescuing a horse from the burning barn, officials said.

Twenty-two chicks and two kittens perished in the blaze, the owner told 69 News.

"I know it's a barn, but it's got a lot of memories. Puppies have been born there, sheep, lambs, mules, donkeys," said Karen Eisenhofer, neighbor.

A state police fire marshal is expected to visit the scene Tuesday in search of the fire's cause.
