Investigators are searching for the cause of an explosion that sparked an underground fire near a school in Reading on Thursday.
It happened around 12:30 p.m. in the area of North 8th and Elm streets, across the street from the I-Lead Charter School.
Fire officials said the explosion resulted in an electrical vault fire beneath the street. Firefighters quickly got control of the situation and requested the immediate response of a Met-Ed to make repairs, officials said.
The charter school was not evacuated, but students were moved to the opposite side of the building as a precaution while the situation was being assessed.
Some Met-Ed customers in the area are without electricity as a result of the incident, officials said.
