State police are investigating the death of a 92-year-old man who died following an altercation inside an assisted living facility in Schuylkill County.
The incident took place Monday at the Pinebrook Personal Care and Retirement Center near Orwigsburg, state police said Thursday.
Fred John Govern suffered minor head and facial pain and abrasions to both arms in an altercation with another resident inside the facility, police said.
Govern was subsequently transported to the Schuylkill Medical Center in Pottsville for treatment, but police said he suffered cardiac arrest and died before his release.
"It's hard to believe as far as I'm concerned," said Govern's former neighbor, Newton Mull.
Govern's son, Fred Govern, Jr., spoke to 69 News from Florida.
"They were in line ready to go in to eat like they do every day, breakfast, lunch and supper. It was supper time, 5 o'clock," he explained. "This fellow jumps in front of the line when everybody was lined up for maybe 20 minutes or so. My father had to have said something to him about jumping the line, which I know he would do, knowing my father. The guy just turned around when my father checked him and started punching him."
Govern, Jr. said his father stayed and ate before he was taken to the hospital.
An autopsy on Govern has been completed, but officials have not released the results. In the meantime, the investigation continues.
