The owner of a local construction business stands accused of defrauding his own church.

SHILLINGTON, Pa. -

The owner of a local construction business stands accused of defrauding his own church.

Robert Mathias surrendered Monday to detectives with the Berks County district attorney's office.

Mathias, owner of Berks-Mont Construction, accepted $7,000 from the pastor of St. John Baptist La Salle Church in Shillington as a down payment for work to be done at the church in the fall of 2011, officials said.

The work, which included tearing down an existing porch and building a new porch, was never started, despite Mathias, a parishioner of the church, cashing the $7,000 check, official said.

Mathias, 47, of South Heidelberg Township, was charged with deceptive or fraudulent business practices, theft by deception and receiving stolen property.
