Dr. Maryellen Kueny, principal, Brecknock Elementary School (far left) and Nancy Bergman-Kerr (far right) join some of the school's students as they prepare to raise the flag, which once flew over the U.S. Capitol. Bergman-Kerr, a 1958 Governor Mifflin graduate, donated the flag to the district.

A donation added a special touch to tradition at Brecknock Elementary School in Berks County.

Students and staff gathered around the flagpole outside the school Monday morning for the annual flag-raising ceremony to celebrate the start of the new school year.

This year, the flag that was raised came from Nancy Bergman-Kerr, a 1958 graduate of the Governor Mifflin School District and a member of the Woman's Club of Lincoln Park.

The flag once flew over the U.S. Capitol before being given on July 12, 1989, to the late U.S. Rep. Gus Yatron, who later presented it to the Woman's Club.

Bergman-Kerr offered the flag to the district after recalling a flag-raising ceremony to celebrate the opening of Governor Mifflin High School, of which she was part of its first senior class.

"When we heard that Nancy wanted to give this very special flag to our district, we were honored," said Maryellen Kueny, Brecknock's principal. "To be able to share the story of this flag with our Brecknock community is tremendous."

Bergman-Kerr was on hand for the ceremony, during which the students also recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang patriotic songs.
