READING, Pa. -

A bomb scare forced buses to stop rolling through the BARTA Transportation Center in downtown Reading on Friday.

The police bomb squad was called in to check out what officials said was as a suspicious package left on a bus inside the center on South 8th Street, between Cherry and Franklin.

In the meantime, the BTC, which serves some 40 buses each hour, was evacuated, with buses picking up and dropping off passengers at the nearby Franklin Street Station.

The package, described as a small, plastic box with tape, was then removed from the bus so that the bomb squad could set off a charge and disrupt any real explosive that could have been inside.

It turned out, officials said, the box posed no harm.

Buses returned to the center shortly before 12:30 p.m.
