Berks County Association for the Blind seeking volunteers

It is a daily struggle for those with a disability to complete routine tasks. That is why the Berks County Association for the Blind is creating a new program to assist those with a visual impairment.
Michael Hill is one of the many clients who attend programs at the Blind Association.
"I think they are good. They get me out of the house. We have lunches once a month. We are starting to get out and do day trips and stuff," said Hill.
The organization offers several programs, including a lunch bunch program that Michael attends. It allows people to gather for lunch at different restaurants around Berks County.
"It has done a tremendous amount for Michael. It socializes him. It gets him out and makes him feel a part of the community," said Paula Hill, Michael's mother.
The association also employs people with visual impairments. Some of the daily activities include picking two nuts and bolts and putting them into a Ziploc bag.
"I was looking for work for a long time and this place gave me a chance when no one else would. So I have to appreciate that at least," said Michael Hill.
In addition to those already partaking in the programs, the Blind Association is adding eight to 10 case loads a month, so it is looking for volunteers from the community to help transport people to the programs, as well as around Berks County for daily tasks.
"It is beyond transportation. It is staying with them and helping them through that process and getting the food or clothing that they need to procure," said Donald Gemmiti, Blind Association president & CEO.
If you would like to volunteer for transportation, you need to have a vehicle, a clean driving record and insurance.
