The Antietam School Board has posted an open letter online following the district's recent failed merger with the Exeter Township School District.

LOWER ALSACE TWP., Pa. -

The Antietam School Board has posted an open letter online following the district's recent failed merger with the Exeter Township School District.

The board said it wants to clear up some misunderstandings about the district and the merger.

"Contrary to many pieces of misinformation presented during this process, our motivation for the merger discussion was simply to provide more opportunities for the students of both districts," the letter states. "It became difficult to counter or refute emotionally charged claims levied by misinformed merger opponents."

The board said Antietam does not need to merge with another district in order to avoid financial distress.

"Antietam is as financially stable as most districts in the state and in a much better financial position than some other districts in Berks County," the letter states. "The truth is that all districts in our state are in danger of financial distress if the state legislators do not re-institute proper funding."

The letter also talks about potential tax rate changes and what's next for the district.
